El patrón de abanico plano funciona como una línea de rociado, con un impacto mayor que los patrones de cono hueco o lleno, pero no tan alto como una boquilla de chorro sólido.Los tamaños de las gotas producidas por esta boquilla son mayores que los de las boquillas cónicas, aunque ciertas boquillas de abanico plano que atomizan aire pueden producir gotas muy finas.Para cubrir un área, una boquilla de abanico plano requiere alguna forma de movimiento relativo, a menudo logrado mediante un transportador que mueve los productos bajo una serie de pulverizadores de abanico plano.Alternativamente, la propia boquilla puede estar en movimiento para garantizar una cobertura completa.
